Web Stats in May 2011
Web Stats in May 2011 May 2011 was a poor performing month due to the end of school season. However, we remain very optimistic about our long-term traffic growth due to our ongoing development and marketing efforts. There were 162 unique, non-spam lead (down from 193 in April). 2,440 visitors came to Tutorz. (2,890 in April). The visitor-to-lead conversion ratio dropped again to 6.5% (from 6.7% in April). Only 15 new tutors signed up (in April it was 27). The traffic loss also caused Alexas to lower Tutorz Global Rank down to 12.2 million (1.08 million in April) and the U.S. local rank down to 640,000 (475,000 in April). Unfortunately, the bounce rate has increased yet again from 41.6% to 43.6%. The graphs below visualize some of these of web statistics.

Cengage Unlimited An Alternative to Expensive Textbook Prices via Pixabay Are you looking for an alternative way to buy your textbooks without foregoing the purchase completely? Cengage Unlimited might be the best option for you! Youll have access to thousands of digital products across 70 subjects and 675 coursesâ"for one price, no matter how many Cengage materials you use. Even after your subscription ends, youll have access to your course materials for one year for free! Cengages new subscription service is coming at a crucial time for todays college students. 85% of students reported that their textbooks and course materials caused financial stress. Some students are even foregoing buying textbooks altogether, simply hoping that they wont suffer academic consequences because of it. âFor too long, our industry has contributed to the lack of affordable access to higher learning. Despite years of student and faculty complaints, the industry continued to push an outdated, traditional business model that didnât put students first,â said Michael Hansen, CEO, Cengage. âAt Cengage, those days are over,â Hansen continued. âAs a student-focused company, we have very deliberately embarked on a path to replace the industryâs century-old business model and offer students unlimited access to quality learning at an affordable price. We believe Cengage Unlimited will smash barriers to access for students by using the simple approach they already embrace in their daily lives, including movies, music and even health care.â Its tough to find textbook alternatives. Some students opt to buy their textbooks off of former students, but oftentimes must settle for older versions. Other students buy their textbooks from used bookstores, but this can still be a financial burden. If you are looking for a way to save money this semester, look into Cengage Unlimiteds new option for a subscription-based online textbook solution! You wont be disappointed.
7 Strategies to Make Reading in a Foreign Language the Easiest Thing You Ever Learn
7 Strategies to Make Reading in a Foreign Language the Easiest Thing You Ever Learn If youre reading this, congratulations!English is one of the most difficult languages to learn to read. From word to word, the same sounds in English are often spelled differently, or the same spellings are pronounced differently. Research has shown that English-speaking children take more than twice as long to learn to read as children who speak most other European languages. But youre not reading this article because you want to bask in the glory of being able to read English; you want to learn to read a whole other language! The good news is that reading in whatever foreign language youre interested in is probably easier than reading in English. The even better news is that reading in a foreign language can actually be the easiest thing you ever learn. With the right strategies, itll come much more naturally than getting down all that vocabulary or sharpening up your listening comprehension skills. With the right techniques, language learning can usually be fun, but this is even more true of learning to read in a foreign language: basically all you have to do is read whatever you want, and youll get better at reading.Of course, there are a few tricks you want to use along the way to make your âreading whatever you wantâ as efficient, effective and painless as possible. Here they are. 7 Strategies to Make Reading in a Foreign Language the Easiest Thing You Ever Learn1. Transfer Your Reading Skills from Your Native LanguageIf you can read one language, you can read them allâ"sort of. Studies (like this one) have suggested that to an extent, reading skills transfer from one language to another. In other words, learning to read in a foreign language is partly just a matter of learning to read in your native language, learning to speak the foreign language and then putting the two together. However, the catch is that your reading skills only start to transfer in a serious way once you reach a basic level of proficiency in your new language. Therefore, backloadi ng your reading work is the way to go. In the early stages of your language learning, focus on becoming familiar with the language, expanding your vocab and getting a feel for the grammar.Once you have the fundamentals down, start practicing reading more intensively. With a solid grasp on the basics of the language and reading muscles already toned from a lifetime of putting up with written English, youll find its not too hard to put two and two together.2. Split Your Time Between Focused Reading and Relaxed ReadingYou might think the fastest way to learn to read in a foreign language would be to always choose the hardest texts you can find and power through them with a dictionary. It turns out, though, that one of the most important factors in how well you learn to read is simply how much you read. And if youre always trying 110%, youre not going to have the stamina to do the kind of voracious book-guzzling that you need to polish your reading skills.Learning to read in a foreign l anguage is definitely a task where the golden rule of language learning applies: Laziness is the mother of all effective language learning strategies. If youre working too hard, youre just not going to make it through an entire language. So the trick is to divide your time between the kind of intensive, grinding-your-teeth-and-clutching-a-dictionary reading that pushes the limits of your abilities and the kind of Sunday-afternoon-lounging-in-an-armchair-enjoying-a-nice-book reading that lets you put in foreign language reading hours while having a good time. For the focused reading, pick material that will give you a good challenge, and take the time to untangle the bits you dont understand. For the relaxed reading, the point is just to read as much as possible, so go for texts that are easier to get through and that are about topics youre interested in.You can do both on FluentU in bite-sized chunks thanks to authentic videos at many different difficulty levels.FluentU makes it possi ble to learn languages from music videos, commercials, news, inspiring talks and more. With FluentU, you hear languages in real-world contextsâ"the way that native speakers actually use them. Just a quick look will give you an idea of the variety of FluentU videos on offer:FluentU really takes the grunt work out of learning languages, leaving you with nothing but engaging, effective and efficient learning. Itâs already hand-picked the best videos for you and organized them by level and topic. All you have to do is choose any video that strikes your fancy to get started! Each word in the interactive captions comes with a definition, audio, image, example sentences and more.Access a complete interactive transcript of every video under the Dialogue tab, and easily review words and phrases from the video under Vocab. You can use FluentUâs unique adaptive quizzes to learn the vocabulary and phrases from the video through fun questions and exercises. Just swipe left or right to see mor e examples of the word youre studying. The program even keeps track of what youâre learning and tells you exactly when itâs time for review, giving you a 100% personalized experience.Start using FluentU on the website with your computer or tablet or, better yet, download the FluentU app from the iTunes store or Google Play store. You might want to plan out in advance how youre going to split youre time between focused reading and relaxed reading. For example, you might chill with some no-big-deal reading 80% of the time and going full-blown-language-learner-wielding-flashcards-and-not-afraid-to-use-them with a copy of War and Peace the other 20% of the time.3. Do Group ReadingReading is fun, but it can get lonely. After all, a recent study showed that librarians are twice as likely as people with any other occupation to list life-size blow-up dolls as their primary emergency contacts. (Just kidding.)Doing group readings is a great way to make burying your face in a book a s ocial activity. Just get a group of like-minded (or at least like-languaged) language learners together, and take turns reading aloud while everyone follows along the written text. There are two big advantages you get from group reading. First, hearing someone read the words and following along visually at the same time connects your aural memory of how words sound with your visual impression of how they look on the page. Second, you can pause every few pages or so and do a group recap or discussion (in the language youre learning!) covering what youve read so far.If you want to emphasize the discussion part of things, another variant on this strategy is to have a book club. And if you dont know anyone learning your language, dont let that deter you from forming a reading groupâ"this is the Internet age! Go looking on social media and places where language learners gather online, and theres a good chance youll find people interested in either a real-life or virtual reading group.4. Re-re-re-readIve already talked about splitting your time between focused reading and relaxed reading, but the question remains: What exactly do you do when youre doing focused reading? One of my favorite strategies for parsing texts that stretch the boundaries of my reading comprehension is re-re-re-reading, which involves reading a text through four times, concentrating on different things each time through. The basic idea is to start off reading for the big picture, then work down to the details, then move back up to the big picture. Heres how it goes:Round 1: Get the gist of the passageOn the first pass through, read for the gist. Just get a sense of what the text is about and a general feel for whats happening. Dont get too hung up on words you dont know. However, depending on how opaque the passage is, you might have to look up words here and there even to get at the overall meaning.Round 2: Go over in more detail, looking up words you dont knowPass two is the bring-out-the-t oolbox-and-take-this-thing-apart round. This is when you do want to get hung up on the details, looking up all words you dont know and making sure you understand how the grammatical structure of the text is working. This is when you break the thing down into its parts and figure out how each of those parts works.Round 3: Put together all the new details you understandAfter breaking the passage down into its details, you now want to put those details back together into a unified whole. This pass through the text is about synthesizing everything you learned in pass two about what individual words mean and how the grammar fits together. You can think of this stage as reading for the gist, like in step one, while incorporating all the new information from step two. You want to read quickly enough to get a birds eye view of the whole passage, but do take enough time to integrate most of the new knowledge you gleaned form step two.Round 4: Do a final recap, aiming for speedIn the fourth an d final run through of the text, speed is the name of the game. Now that youve broken down the text and put it back together, the idea is to go through grasping the meaning as quickly as possible. Try to push yourself on this one, both in terms of holding onto the things you learned in step 2 and getting through the passage faster than you thought you could.5. Read AloudWhen working on reading, its helpful to keep in mind that reading is really just an extension of speaking and listening. This fact is key to making reading the easiest thing you do in your foreign language studies. One way to take advantage of the link between spoken and written language is to actually speak and listen while you read. Just speak whatever youre reading out loud to yourself as you read it. When you make connections between listening, reading and speaking, all three will improve.6. Do Less Slow ReadingIf you want to keep yourself on your toes and challenge your brain to parse the words youre reading a li ttle more quickly, try some timed reading activities. Speed reading doesnt need to be your goal, just reading less slowly than you used to and setting new personal bests is the most important thing. You can do timed reading either by setting a timer while you read so you can see how long it takes you to get through a given text and calculate your reading speed in words-per-minute, or by giving yourself a predetermined amount of time to complete a passage.Besides pushing your brain to process the text youre looking at a little faster, âless slowâ reading will add a little excitement to your reading practiceâ"which is never a bad idea, since boredom is the death of language learning.7. Use ContextContext is the best language teacher youll ever have. Think about it: You learned your native language entirely from context. When youre reading, always try to take advantage of context as much as possible. Whenever you reach a word you arent familiar with, force yourself to guess its mean ing before reaching for the dictionary, then look it up to see if you were right. This is actually a good tip for all aspects of language learning, but its especially important for reading exercises, where you can find yourself reaching instinctively for the dictionary over and over. Forcing yourself to guess things from context turns language learning into a puzzle of sorts, and youll have a stronger memory for the words you can guess correctly from context than the ones you have to type into Google Translate to understand. It can seem intimidating to be confronted with a wall of text in a language you still have a tenuous grasp on, but if you use strategies like transferring your foreign language speaking and native reading skills, balancing relaxed and focused reading, starting a reading group, reading out loud, re-re-re-reading and taking advantage of context, youll see that reading in a foreign language is a skill that just naturally gets better with time if you let it.And if you ever find yourself getting frustrated, just rememberâ"youve already learned to read English, you can do anything!
6 Killer Reasons to Learn a Second Language
6 Killer Reasons to Learn a Second Language 6 Killer Reasons to Learn a Second Language The modern world is a hectic place. It makes us look at everything as a cost versus benefit situation. You might ask yourself why should I find the time to learn a new language?Everyone knows its hard work to learn a new language. And its not just about the work you put inâ"its about becoming familiar with new words, phrases, grammar and sounds over a long period of time. This article will explain to you why learning a new language isnt a chore, but something amazing that can improve almost every aspect of your life! 6 Killer Reasons to Learn a Second Language1. Being awesome.Remember the scene in Waynes World when Rob Lowes character orders Chinese food in flawless Cantonese? Remember how impressed everyone wasâ"including Waynes girlfriend, Cassandra? The movie may have been a screwcap comedy, but that scene hit the nail right on the head. The fact is, people love it when they find out you can speak another language. In their eyes, you suddenly become 100% more interesting. Early in the movie Braveheart, William speaks to Murron in French. Anyone who remembers the scene will know its the moment when she realizes shes falling in love with him.Language has that strange power over people. If youve ever been at a party where someone sat down at the piano or picked up a guitar and started playing beautifully, youll know what Im talking about. People just gather around. We love being surprised by hidden talents.Imagine being able to order your meal in Japanese on a first date or joke with the waiters at the local trattoria in Italian. This is James Bond-level coolness. Nothing screams sophistication like fluency in another language.2. Being professional. The world seems like it shrinks a little every day. Rapid globalization means that doing business with people from other countries and continents is more common than ever before. On one hand, learning another language is being a responsible global citizen. On the other hand, it gives us an edge professionally. Its hard to overstate just how much people enjoy it when we make an effort to speak in their language. Even if we make mistakes, attempts are always appreciated! It might just be a local greeting or a super polite thank you, but youll always be the foreigner who tried to speak Korean or French. Youll be remembered. If a Japanese company has to make a choice between two equally impressive presentations, whos going to win that contract? Will it be Joe Bloggs who delivered everything in English? Or will it be you, who stood out by showing off your newly-acquired language skills?Put yourself in an employers shoes. Imagine youre holding two resumes. Both are almost identical. One of the applicants speaks German in addition to English. The other speaks only English. Who do you think has the edge?3. Unlocking the door to the rest of the world.Recent graduates will know how tough the job market can be at home. But further afield things look brighter. With college debts to pay off, its increasingly c ommon for fresh grads to head to Japan or Korea to teach. There are plenty of skills shortages in Europe. Booming China is always on the lookout for highly educated workers. Natural resources abound in Latin America, the Middle East is rich in oilthe possibilities for employment abroad are diverse and endless. What better way to secure a lucrative international position than by having some of the local language already mastered?Dont let life pass you by. If you feel career opportunities are limited at home, look abroad. Your country is your home but outside the front door is an ocean of possibility, and learning another language is the key to opening that door.4. Understanding other cultures.People take you seriously when youve mastered another language. It takes discipline and intelligence. Subconsciously or not, people recognize this.Take it from someone living in a foreign country: everyone respects the people who can speak the local language. Expats admire your intellectual abili ties. Locals are flattered that youve embraced their culture. It really is win-win.But learning a new language isnt just about looking good. Its about feeling good and discovering new things. You truly begin to understand a foreign culture when you speak the language, but to understand Russia we dont have to read Tolstoy. We gain our greatest insights into a culture from simple things. Old proverbs, for example. Conversations with taxi drivers. Cabbies invariably know about the best bars and restaurants. If you really want to make the most of that weekend abroad, be able to chat with your driver. You wont regret it.Not only will they know the secrets that let you explore their city like a local, theyll also be able to give you the latest gossip about local celebrities and politicians. Why taxi drivers? Because at some point they or their colleagues have driven these people somewhere! Plus, theyre talking to different people all day long while doing their job, and theyre always on to p of the big local scoop. When we want to get our news fix at home we read a paper. We seldom do this abroad because we dont speak the language. But interesting news stories hidden in the corner of page 12 reveal the quirks of a foreign culture. A local pop star has been arrested for causing mayhem on a flight? You might not read about it at home, but it sure is fun to take a peek into this other world. As Bill Bryson once said of reading local newspapers, What a comfort it is to find a nation preoccupied with matters of no possible consequence to oneself. It is, he says, like going through a strangers drawers.5. Being good to your brain.By now youre aware of some of the social benefits of learning a second language, but how about the health benefits? Our brain controls our entire body, yet we dont always treat it the way we should.Everyone knows exercise is good for the body. Thats why we spend so much time at the gym. Its also why everyone obsesses over diets. But what about our min d? It also needs exercise to keep in tip-top shape. This is where language learning comes in.Christos Pliatsikas of the University of Kent School of Psychology states that Everyday handling of more than one language functions as an intensive cognitive stimulation that benefits specific brain structures and protects them against deterioration in older age. In other words, studying languages helps to defend your brain against the onset of dementia and the general effects of aging. So there you go. Even if you plan on travelling no further than the kitchen, the study of grammar rules and new vocabulary is the perfect exercise to keep your mind healthy.6. Helping your mind function at its peak. The jury is in: Learning another language makes you smarter. Studying a new language makes us see our mother tongue in a new light, giving us insights into how we structure sentences, use grammar and even how we think. Lets look at average SAT verbal scores (by foreign language studied). They certa inly give food for thought. The average for an American student (that is, an American student who studies only English) on the verbal section of the SAT is about 500 points.Students who also study Spanish in addition to English score higher than this, averaging around 560.Let that sink in for a minute. Thats a whole sixty point difference! But wait, it doesnt end there.Students who study French and German do even better, with French learners scoring an average of 630 points on the SAT. This article is too short to explain the reasons for the different point averages for each language, but the message is clear. Studying new languages benefits us in ways we cant even begin to imagine.Youve seen how learning a new language can impress people, provide career opportunities, open up new cultures, increase brain health and help you to do better on exams. So what are you waiting for?Youve got all the reasons you could possibly need.Get learning!

Why Introverts Should Consider Taking a Mental Health Day - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Why Introverts Should Consider Taking a Mental Health Day - Introvert Whisperer Why Introverts Should Consider Taking a Mental Health Day Kayla Matthews November 26, 2018 Adaptability, Neuroscience No responses Go to top Being an introvert in an extroverted world can be stressful. Were expected to be consistently in contact with everyone around us, both for work and social activities, and quite frankly, it can be exhausting. One idea that has become more popular in recent years is the concept of the mental health day. What are mental health days, and why should introverted individuals consider taking one? What Is a Mental Health Day? While taking a mental health day is a relatively new concept, its no different from staying home when youre feeling under the weather. As its name suggests, a mental health day is a day you take off from work when you need to focus on your mental health. These recently made the news when a woman sent an email to her companys CEO letting them know she was taking a couple of sick days to take care of her mental health. The CEO responded, thanking her for helping reduce the negative stigma surrounding mental health care. Why Should You Take a Mental Health Day? If you identify as introverted â" as someone who feels exhausted by social or professional interaction and regains their energy by spending time in solitude â" why should you consider taking a mental health day or two? Studies have shown introverts are more likely to experience depression symptoms than extroverts. While depression can affect anyone, individuals who identify as introverted are often more sensitive, experience more social anxiety and internalize an inferiority complex. These things alone hurt the psyche, but together they can result in full-blown depression. Most mental health services dont deal well with introverts, so if you find yourself staying in an inpatient facility, you may not have any time for privacy and quiet. This is inherently detrimental for introverts, who recharge and heal best when others leave them alone. As an introvert, you may have a smaller core circle of friends than extroverts do. These are specially chosen individuals who dont drain you with their presence, but it also means you might not have someone you can call on short notice if youre having a mental health crisis. Introverts also spend more time alone than with others, so they might not have someone there who can tell them when theyre acting strangely or out of character. Taking a mental health day gives you the opportunity to step back and assess your mental health, and take steps to fix it if it needs fixing, without work stress weighing down on you. Cutting Through the Stigma Popular media regularly portrays mental health and mental illness in a negative light. In addition to influencing the public perception of mental health, this negative stigma discourages individuals from seeking out professional help when they need it. The only way were going to cut through this stigma is to talk about it. Bring it, kicking and screaming if need be, into the daylight. Not talking about mental illness doesnt make it go away â" it merely means those with the conditions continue to suffer in the shadows. Saying youre taking a mental health day is a great way to get the conversation started. What If You Cant Take a Day Off? If you work for a company that doesnt support mental health days, what can do you if you feel yourself getting overwhelmed in the office?
